Harmonics & Flicker testing

'Harmonics' as defined by EMC standards refers to harmonics of the 50 or 60Hz mains supply that are imposed on the current drawn from the supply by the product. Most products do cause these 'harmonics' and even though the amount created by each product may be small, the overall effect of many 1,000s on the local electricity supply network causes problems.

The EMC Directive now includes limits on harmonics which are mandatory on all products connected to the public mains supply. The standard for products rated at up to 16A/phase is IEC61000-3-2. The AC2000A is fully compliant with this standard and will provide all the measurements necessary to complete the compliance assessment. This same instrument, also includes flicker measurements as required by IEC61000-3-3, to include inrush current measurement.
The Harmonics standard includes a requirement for the incoming mains to be itself free from harmonic content (<0.1% THD) as this may otherwise affect the accuracy of any measurements. The AC1000A is a clean power source that will provide a pure sine wave with the required low THD for loads up to 1kW.

AC2000A

Harmonics & Flicker Analyzer

The Laplace Harmonics and Flicker analyser provides the user with a complete system for testing product compliance with IEC61000-3-2 and IEC61000-3-3. Quick and easy to use, the built-in screen provides a clear pass/fail indication of compliance status, plus a full listing of results for each harmonic, in either tabular of bargraph format. The instrument is properly configured to cope with fluctuating harmonics. The Flicker mode provides proper measurement of short term and long term parameters, using algorithms specified in IEC61000-4-15. In addition, inrush current measurements can be automated such that the product under test can be automatically cycled on/off with user entered time profiles.

Key Points

  • Stand alone, self contained... a completely integrated instrument
  • Immediate display of compliance status with full listing of all measurements
  • Power meter functions included.
  • Easy setup and automatic analysis against standards
  • Optional clean power source available (AC1000A)

Bargraph result format

Tabular result format

AC1000A

Clean Power Source

The AC1000 achieves its unique price/performance ratio by actively adjusting the incoming mains waveform to produce a clean output. Other suppliers use convertor techniques to completely recreate the output from scratch. Our solution delivers an output which achieves the required THD with the minimum of hardware and expense. It includes the ability to switch the correction in or out so that the original waveform can be observed and measured if required. Overload and thermal protection systems are built-in and produce an audible warning if activated.

Key Points

  • Provides fully compliant power to the EUT for up to 1kW
  • Small size and cost effective
  • Ideal for Harmonics compliance testing.
  • THD output is 0.1% max (as required by the standards)
